Directions |
This calculator finds the minimum detectable object size per pixel, the total area to be viewed, and the field of view of the lens, based on data entered for the CCD size and resolution, the focal length of the lens, and the distance from the lens to the object being targeted. Each camera with lens has a CCD size and focal length. Zoom cameras have a range of focal lengths, for example 4 to 64 (see table.) Use the table above to find the values to use for our most popular cameras. If not on the list, the camera's focal length(s) and CCD size should be listed on the camera detail page. Then enter a numeric value for the distance from the lens to the object followed by a selection from the drop box for the designation of distance; the combined defaults yield 10 meters. Select the CCD size from the options in the drop box or select CUSTOM (mm). The standard default is 1/4 inch. Select standard resolutions from the drop down box. Our video cameras typically output 640x480 video. The result is displayed as a very accurate rendering of the minimum detectable size of the target object, in millimeters, the total viewed area in XX by XX format, further modifiable with the selection of the designation for size display. Finally, the field of view is given in degrees. |
